Rolled up to the, newly named ‘Can you Rock?’ event in montreal this past weekend; formerly Meeting of styles. I was looking forward to 12 hours in the car making light conversation with myself since i had no takers on wanting to go to the event from my area. Luckily the day before i got in touch with Dave-foto (Mr Ny with a lens) who had his ride back out on him due to some extenuating circumstances. Im kinda slow to get to know people so i was a lil apprehensive of sitting in a whip with a someone i didnt know very well for so long. Luckily Mr Foto couldn’t be a nicer dude. The ride to the border went off with out a hitch, and the wait to get the customs booth was shorter then usual. Thank god ive been the victim of identity theft at some point and the Canadians are on the case. They Hauled us in for a car tossing and 20 questions. There is part of me that would love to give them the excitement they so dearly need at the border, to bad i keeps my nose clean. I know theyd have been stoked to nab someone for something good. At any rate the Canadian border patrol is not to be trifled with. Even though i was ina t-shirt they still asked to see my arm tattoos; Note i dont have ANY. Rasta and Tattoo dont really go hand in hand, but bless them for not making any rash generalizations. They wouldnt be specific about what the other me had done or why they were so interested in him, but they did tell me there was someone fitting my description who had my exact date name and DOB. which to me is impossible as my fisrt and last name might be common the combination of middle names creates some serious odds of it being matched. In high school i had a friend who was born on the same day as I and had initials that matched save our last names, but he was a mullet rocking Rocker dude. Anyway i digress. I cleared up the confusion at the border, until next i cross im sure), and it was smooth sailing into Montreal.

I dropped Dave off with his people and went to get some paint and kill sometime until the rest of the crew arrived from New England. Finally i got a text saying they were headed to do a silver on the other side of town. Game on. I programmed the GPS and was in the whip ready to rock. The GPS had me 6 kilometers from my destination, an mere 11 minutes away. Apparently there was some huge fire that shut down the east west highways and seriously congested the. A quick two hours later and i was at the spot ready to paint.

I arrived to spot and was instructed to park in a lot of closed business and then climb under a fence. There is something baffling about getting to a legal wall via some means the make it feel illegal, but after some initial taunting about being quite and blowing up the spot it was revealed that it was actually a permission spot. The fellas had already started, since it took me so long to get there so i had to work pretty fast to catch up and not hold up forward progress when we were all done. so for a slow motion hor or so i painted this silver, the whole time there was some poor starving cat letting the world know how unhappy it was. I love animals but i was ready to kill this cat after about 40 minutes of it crying. I almost got it food at a corner store near buy but it didn’t have anything i cat would enjoy. SO we all suffered a bit.

Rath silver Montreal CA.

We finally made it back to the flop house, (dont be fooled by the flop bit, it was an awesome house), where i immediately tried to pass out. However Preys was out for blood and and spent the night raping the magical forrest to death, he clear cut the forrest. Every-time i was about to fall asleep hed start the industrial chain saw and get back to snoring. Its not a road trip if you wake up well rested and clear headed. after some coffee it was on to the main event. I dont think ive painted so slowly in years, i could NOT get it together into some sort of workable rhythm for hours. Thanks to Kems for waking up early to go get flicks of the silver while the pansies slept and i tired to sleep…

At any rate Montreal is pretty awesome, the more I go the more i like it, and in recent years have been able to like it more as ive had a chance to get further out from its downtown, which is cool, but not really where the magic is.

Saturday Williamsburg was made a bit more clever then it is already. IN addition to the plethora of tight jeans, extra thick black rimmed glasses and  ”i care so much about my appearance i pretend not to care’, style hair cuts there was some true Street hooligans in effect, bringing some of that old flavor back to Williamsburg, that hoes on the corner and needles in the gutter, type vibe, expect civilized and on good behavior. And like the willie b weve all come to know and despise, it was a day of not from heres, representing such far flung locals as Spain, france,Puerto Rico, Boston, Long island and even the Bronx. I with aid of the ever green idling car we rocked a block wrapped wall listing to jems ranging from audio two to U2, thats right straight hip-hop.

thanks to Kem5, Pun, Owns, Gusto, Sen2, Deem for the hook-up. DaveFoto Big up your self.

Testing of the journeyman

The testing of the journeyman.

As recent days go Sunday morning wasnt much unlike the days before it. Sunny and shaping up to be a scorcher. I woke up about 830am, got my crap together and headed out to link up with Kem and Stae2 (dont get excited they are only mentioned in the story,  this is a low budget sotry and we couldnt afford to more then jsut mention them); sort of. Since becoming a father, Ive had me cool downgraded a bit so I wasn’t going to embarrass them by paint with them, just near by, but i digress. Im on the road by 915am, stopping at a bodega to grab some travel drinks, i realized i wasn’t wearing my painting shoes. Caution to the wind, and not wanting to be any later then i was already i decided to not go home and switch it up. 930am driving along  listening to traffic, when BOOM loud ass noise, obstructing the pleasant traffic sounds. At first i decided it was the muffler, HOPED it was the muffler, you can drive with a fucked up muffler. You just end up announcing your self several miles prior to arrival. Quickly my hopes we dashed as the car became somewhat splash and was not handling well at all. Yeah!!!!!! 931am, Limped to the shoulder of the highway. I get out and walk around the car to find the driver side rear tire destroyed. Equal parts, anger, frustration and  embarrassment prevented photos from being taken, plus we all know what a baller ass 5 series BMW looks like, and for the proposes of this story thats what i rock, on the weekends.
935am, what to do do. Its hot, dam, if its this hot now its gonna be like death later. I have triple A. I am also at times a stubborn ass motherfucker, who is god dam MAN. I can change a tire, and make a fire, Im a survivor; it is however really hot out and i have triple A. 945am, im MAN, i can change and tire and make a fire god Dam it, lets GO! Everything from the trunk of the car is now on the side of the road so i can get the spare tire and the jack out from its nest conveniently placed under the area youre encouraged to store shit; good planning. 950, Jacks in place ready to life, but wait whats that batman, your lug nut wrench isnt the right size? How can this be? WTF, seriously. What dumb-ass at the plant ran out of size 5 wrench kits and just tossed in a size 4, like its ‘close enough’. Okay, that sucks i coulda been back on the road and ready to rock if the wrench was the right size. 955am, FUCK! SO triple A it is. I get on the horn with with triple A, go through the 20 minute rigga-ma-roll, until the magic happnes. All the info to finally get told the inevitable. 1005am, “Sir Im sorry, triple A is not authorized to operate on New York Parkways. You will have to get road side assistance from an Authority authorized company.” YAY! WTF? so whats the bottom line here? Im told they can make the call for me, cool. And i have options, Love options-except when there are too many and it makes impossible the choosing of said options. Option one, have the authorized co come and change tire and what have you and pay them, which can be reimbursed by triple a after submitting receipts, filling out countless forms and a DNA sample. Option two, if next exit is under 4 miles have them tow you for free to the exit, once off parkway property re-call triple A and start the process over again. Option three none above, just sit there like a dummy - somewhat as i was already doing. So being a fan of multi-tasking I chose both option one and option 3.
1040am, Pete showed up in his flat bed. Pete was a nice enough dude, although on eof those people that loved a captive audience and stopped more then a few times in the middle of changing the tire to tell me some roadside assistance stories. 11am, Im back on the road, but not in the direction of the wall, shits too far away to limp on a donut (youd think a 5 series would have a full sized spare). Resigned to call it a day i headed home.
1120am, Enue calls. ‘yo lets go do this wall in jers’. Word? you have no idea, what i jsut went through, and Im at the exit to you crib now, im rolling with you, BOOM A-Team flexible (NH) plan coming together (double NH) .1245pm, COD time in Effect, walls buffed and i been a sweaty mess since the flat tire incident and now am slowly melting into the pavement. Car radio rocking, small water bottle sipping, no shade, living large.

810pm, Getting ready to bounce bounce, Enue starts the car , tries to start the car. Nothing, except the lush sounds of battery clicking with out enough power to turn the engine over. For Fucks sake! Really? 825pm Back on the horn with my good friends at triple A. 20 minute info/account check; ’sir now what is your location?’. Im in XXX new Jersey. ‘Oh you called ny triple A, please let me transfer you’, GREAT! holding. 840, still holding. Pacing. climbing on shit. bored. 850pm connected to nj triple A, but not to the right club zone in NJ, awesome! Finally get through and set it up and help is on the way. However while i was on hold Enue went out onto the street to a near by cab stand to see if he could wrangle a jump. Haha, what dumb-ass in this part of town is gonna agree to follow you in to a secluded and dark parking lot to help you jump a car? 930pm Well Apparently Jose was jsut such a dumb-ass and enue shows up in a cab. Hot dam we back in business baby! 940pm cars on and running, Enue finished his piece a lil bit. 1230am, back at Enues crib to get the whip and limp home. what a fucking day.

Bacon X Rath:

bacon x rath: Rath Ups Cod 3a

Ive been working slowly and spottily on this idea for a few years now. The idea of combining pieces, and have yet to really commit or propperly prepare a wall to do it the way i see it my head; For one reason or another the right time hasnt presented itself yet, or maybe i havent forced it yet. It started with this in Montreal about 2 years ago with this Re-Run X Rath* pictured at the bottom of post.  And Later that year, did this, “rated as Ideated” painful little jawn. IT seems like the more i did it the worse it got, a year ago was this, HeavyXRath.

So this weekend i got back on the fail horse and road out in hopes of doing a decent Bacon X Rath. And as it would happen it was a cool 92 degrees yesterday and the heat Kick the crap out of me. At one point i found myself lying on some concrete that was in the shade, my shirt was up so my back could cool off on the cooler concrete. I drank 2 gallons of water, two 16oz Tropicana Ojs, and a little bit of a Tropicana lemonade, which it turned out was lemon flavored not lemonade so that got trashed. RastaFari is a blessing but the Lox can be an oven in the hot heat and sun parade. There was a lot more background work and top letter integration i wanted to do, but I admitted defeat in the mid evening.

start

Often i get startled by a blank page. In order to disarm it I vandalize it, making me care less about it. Easier to make a messed up page look better then it is to improve on a nice serene solid color. So throw ups and tags are in order.

finished-3Did some clean up/ surface prep with some mists of yellow, orange and red beltons. and started to sketch out some letters.

finished-2

.o7 Staedtler and White Molotow One4All marker.

finished-1

Went in with some brush and One4All ink. Below on the top left you can see i even broke out the old tooth brush for some good ole fashion stippling, i was being a bit cheap with the ink so its some one restrained. However its brought me to the conclusion in need an airbrush to add to the bredth of makrs one can make with Molotow Ink.

finished

I finally pushed a few areas back by doing some top misting with the belton cans. You can see it in the top hat of Ras Top-o-page, and the same for the edges of the checkers. def couls have done more of that kind of stuff with a airbrush.

more images of this can also be seen at the molotow blog: http://www.molotow.com/magazine/blog/blog/2010/02/27/719/

One Four ALL X One4All

Saturday, February 13th, 2010

I recently was given the opportunity to get some support from Molotow, since Its winter and I was also expecting a new Edition to the house i figured id be spending the next little while more inside then outside. I asked, Im sure to the bewilderment of all involved for some One4All Molotow ink instead of paint. What writer would rather have some markers and ink over paint? I can answer that by posing you another question who has two thumbs loves to drawn and runs this site? Thats right This Guy, Hev.

No Im not accustomed to being offered products, so like a true rookie, i kinda picked a random set of colors that when i got them i realized they didn’t all make for a banging color scheme together; good good colors just not all in the same family or value. I was more taken by each color instead of thinking how they would work together. Well experience be dammed, i got what i got and am now scheming on getting the full line of the larger refills.

The first things I did with the ink was to play around with how it took to various surfaces, paper, plastic, metal, paint, cardboard; CHECK. Next up. They are Refills, dump ink out and use a brush; the smaller refills come with a little spouty deal so you can refill markers and or draw with various degrees of controlled drips. So with out much for thought minus a quick pencil sketch i then ignored i just started to draw with brush and black One4All ink on some record boxes i have. I always really dug the photos ive seen of old Jamaican mobile record shop trucks all hand painted and looking fresh, so i kinda moved in that direction with the boxes. The ink handled the brush real well, having a real good viscosity. The next best part of the brush experience was the ease at which with some soap and water, really just water, the brush was cleaned and ready for another color.

Using these Markers is almost like using gouache put into a marker for ease of use, the ink itself is super milky, and drips nice and opaque and matte. Covered All my under-drawing lines, which in some cases was Black Pen.  Im stoked you can get empty markers, refills of standardized colors and replacement nibs; I’m pretty sure Im converted and my Oil based paint pens are not going to get much out of their box time anytime soon.

mixin

For some reason i decided i need to draw Johnny Chimpo, but didn’t have the right colors but was bale to mix some of the brown oranges and whites to vary the chimpo tones. Because i was jsut farting around i ddint mix enough of the browns so i had to water them down a bit to cover the area i had, instead of mixing more. Laziness combined with fear of finishing things i might need more of later can be debilitating; trying to get over it and use.

painting

page1-H

The best part about the matte and acrylic base of this ink is unlike oil based paint markers, it doesnt have its pigment loosen and get goopy in the heat. I have a tone of old black books whos pages are fused together after the sun loosed the oils based paint only to render it a solid mass once cooled; Some pages ive had to resort to putting wax paper in between the pages and even then the ink oil based marker paint transfers itself to the wax.

So Ive concluded i need at there very least All the Primaries Molotov makes in the One4All line and then as many variants in between. Once the weather changes ill be getting paint so im starting an Ink fund now, as there will certainly be some  use of ink in future walls.

You can check out the full line of Molotow markers and inks here, of course they made this after i ordered my markers, but looks like there are better options than i first knew about. One of the coolest features is the nib system which looks like you can slap a Fine nib even on the medium sized markers.
